Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), formerly known as Royal Nepal Nepal Airlines was established on 1 July 1958 through the enactment of the Nepal Airlines Corporation Act. With a base at Tribhuvan International Airport, it conducts flights to various domestic as well as international destinations.
History of Nepal Airlines Corporation
The national flag carrier began its flight with a 28-seater Douglas DC-3 Dakota aircraft that became an icon of Nepal’s aviation history.
NAC conducted flights with 12-seater Chinese plane Fong Shu Harvester AN-2 from 1963 to 1965. 6-seater single-engine aircraft Pilatus Porter PC-6 was introduced in 1961 for flights to STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) destinations. This plane was extremely suitable for flights to remote regions especially, the mountainous terrain.
Likewise, 44-seater Fokker Friendship F-27 was launched in the year 1966 and it conducted flights to international destinations. This aircraft conducted flights till 1970. The national flag carrier received its first 44-seater Avro in 1970. The Hawker Siddley HS-748 Avro was also used on domestic, international destinations, and mountain flights also.
The STOL operation got boosted after NAC introduce a highly efficient Twin Otter DHC-6-300 in the year 1971. This 19-seater Canadian plane proved successful for flight operations to remote regions of Nepal due to its ability to land and take off from small and rough airfields.
The jet era for the Nepali aviation industry began when Nepal Airlines became the proud possessor of a Boeing 727 in 1972. The aircraft which could carry 123 passengers connected the capital city Kathmandu with regional destinations and remained in service till 1993.
NAC also became the proud owner of two Boeing 757s, highly efficient aircraft that could fly on long-haul routes. The Boeing 757 used to carry 190 passengers and displayed the national flag at various airports across the globe.
NAC procured some Chinese manufactured aircraft; Modern Ark MA60 and Harbin Y12E to expand its domestic service. Two 56-seater MA60 were introduced in the year 2014 to conduct trunk routes flight and four 17-seater Y12E were bought in the year 2014 to strengthen STOL flights and become successors for Twin Otter DHC-6-300. However, these both Chinese-manufactured aircraft resulted in more loss than benefit due to which the airline management committee was forced to ground all of them.
Nepal Airlines owns two narrow-body Airbus A320-200s that were bought in 2015 and two wide-bodies Airbus A330-200s introduced in 2018. These jets conduct flights to various international destinations from Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, Nepal.
The airline currently flies to various trunk route sectors and remote regions of Nepal and conducts international flights to Doha (Qatar), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Dubai, Hong Kong, Delhi (India), and Narita (Japan).
