Alaska Airlines History

The initiation of Alaska Airlines began in 1932 when two companies named McGee Airways, and Star Air Service started operating flights in Anchorage. McGee Airways was solely owned by Mac McGee whereas the Star Air Service was owned by Wesley “Earl” Dunkle.

Star Air Service was a flight school at its initial phase and began commercial service in 1933. The Air Service acquired assets of McGee airways after Mac McGee decided to sell his airlines’ assets.

Star Air Service went through various mergers and the name was changed a couple of times. It was in 1944 when the new name ‘Alaska Airlines’ captivated everyone and became unchanged till today.

Alaska Airlines started operating charter flights worldwide in the late 1940s. Likewise, the airline extended its service to other regions and became a center of attraction with regular charter flights to the Soviet Union.

The airline went into a financial crisis in 1972 but it regained confidence after the boarding of Fairbanks businessmen Ron Cosgrace and Bruce Kennedy. These businessmen worked intelligently by setting goals and uniting people together. With that, the airline got trust from creditors and improved on-time performance.

Due to the deregulation of the airline industry in 1979, many airlines ended their career; however, Alaska Airlines grew extensively throughout the West Coast. In 1987, the airline collaborated with two carriers (Horizon Air and Jet America) to enhance its service.

Alaska Airlines tripled its fleet size in the 1980s and initiated regularly scheduled flights to Mexico and Russia. The airline established a new service to Washington D.C. in 2001 and then started flying across the Pacific along with regular service to Hawaii.

The airline was the first-ever commercial carrier in North America to make tickets available online and also the first in the world to let passengers check-in and print boarding passes through the internet.

Alaska Airlines acquired Virgin America in December 2016 to introduce the West Coast’s premier airline. The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) granted a single operating certificate to these airlines in 2018 and both airlines operate as a single airline under the Alaska brand today.
